Today we were up early; we had a lot of ground to cover and were on a time crunch. We needed to make it through our second check point before it closed, as well as catch the bus down from Machupicchu (so we don’t have to hike down). We were hiking by 6 AM and because we merged two hiking trips together it added on mileage today.

We started out by hiking on the railroad tracks to the first checkpoint on the Inca trail. The Inca trail is extremely regulated and we had to present our passports and permits to gain access to the trail to hike. After passing the checkpoint it was uphill to visit the Wiñay Wayna ruins on the way to the Sun Gate, we also lunch at these ruins.

The hike to Sun Gate flew by and we made great time. In one area we had an almost vertical 55 steps to climb before we made it to the gate. We were rewarded with an amazing view of Machupicchu.

Here’s the view from the Sun Gate…

After our break we headed down to the bus. We’re not exploring Machupicchu today, we’ll be covering that tomorrow. Now it’s time to check into our hotel and relax, we’re looking forward to hot showers and beds!
